In the third quarter 2024, total intermodal volume increased by 9.8% compared to the previous year, with international container volumes rising 15.4% and domestic containers up by 6%. Trailer volumes, however, dropped by 11%, according to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA).
"International volume continued to drive growth in the third quarter," stated Joni Casey, IANA president and CEO, in a press release. "We anticipate this momentum will support overall traffic through year-end."

Leading the gains was the Southeast-Southwest corridor, up by 25.9%, followed by South Central-Southwest at 23.8%, Midwest-Northwest at 23.2%, and the Midwest-Southwest corridor, the highest in volume, at 17%.
Trans-Canada traffic rose by 7.4%, while the Intra-Southeast and Northeast-Midwest corridors followed with increases of 2.7% and 0.4%, respectively.
Total intermodal marketing company volume grew by 2.8% from the third quarter of 2023, with intermodal traffic up 9.5% and highway loads declining by 5.8%.
