Due to the reaction to the proposed changes to the Compliance, Accountability, Safety program (CSA) from the American Trucking Association along with shipper & broker groups, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has extended the comment period by 60 days, to July 30th.
In the March 27th Federal Register, the FMCSA issued a notice of proposed plans to improve its Safety Measurement System (SMS), to better its data collection and score creation. The system uses real-time information from states to assign scores based on seven categories to help better determine safety issues. The ATA has already asked U.S. Congress to mandate changes to the CSA in the next surface transportation bill. The extended comment period will also provide the ATA and other agencies opportunity to voice their opinions and help the FMCSA address some of the issues they may have with the proposed changes. Stay tuned as more unfolds.
