Reflecting higher spot market rates, growing freight demand and declining capacity, truckload line-haul rates jumped 2.9 percent in January, the biggest year-over-year increase since February 2013. Spot market rates year-over-year were up 13 percent in January.
Intermodal rates rose 1.7 percent from a year ago in January, as the Cass Intermodal Price Index increased for the first time year-over-year since August. “Truckload costs are increasing. Inevitably, then, intermodal costs will also rise,” Cass analysts said. Intermodal rates were up 2.2 percent from December.
