Truck Tonnage Slowed in August

Although truck tonnage is up 3.2 percent from where it was a year ago in August, tonnage dropped 0.9 percent compared to June and July of this year, according to the American Trucking Association’s (ATA) assessment for the second quarter of 2012. The cause is attributed to lowered manufacturing output and spikes in inventories, which have reduced freight demand this past August. In a year by year comparison, tonnage is up 3.7 percent in the January-August 2012 period compared to 2011.
